RESTAURANT REVIEW FOR THE MONTH...
When you go out and your not satisfied, it’s your right to speak your mind… When you go out and you are disappointed, let them know…
It’s your right…
WE SAY IT ALL... WHY??... BECAUSE WE SIMPLY CAN...
@ Cape Town Internation Airport
Friday, 12 th of October brought me to the Cape Town International Airport to pick up someone arriving on a domestic flight from Johannesburg…
We telephonically agreed that she would decline the dinner on board the plane, and that we will dine at one of the airport restaurants, and then hit the town…
Upon arrival, baggage in hand, we saw the famous Green and Red signs of the so-called “family restaurant” DROS…
We stood in the entrance for some time, and waited to be seated, to no avail… so we simply entered, carrying the baggage with us. Half way into the restaurant, we were asked by a member of staff, (later we found out that it was one of the ”too busy” waiters) what we where looking for??
We simply said that we would like a table… We were shown to a dirty, un-set table for four with 1 chair… “Nice going for starters…” … I thought, as I had to get a chair for myself from the adjacent table, which also only had one chair!!
As we sat down and waited for the menu, service, or the sight of a waiter, I checked the time (22h38) and me and my dining-companion chatted away about the flight, turbulence etc.
As we sat there, trying to keep the basting sauce, salt, oil and watermarks on the table left behind by the previous diners, we noticed that there was a client fast asleep at one of the tables… another two kinds where lying on 3 chairs, also sleeping, explaining the lack of chairs at our and the adjacent table.
Still waiting for some sort of service, we kept ourselves busy laughing at the drunk patron sleeping on the table and mumbling away, and chatting about the rugby, the weeks plans etc.
Eventually, at 22h58, I got up and made my way to the bar. Behind the bar, I got the attention of Anthea, and asked her who the managers are that’s on duty. I was told (Not too sure about the spelling) that it is Vigan (Viga??) and Basil… but that they are busy, and “what is my problem and why do I want to know?”
I explained to her that we were shown to a dirty table, with one chair and no menus, no service and that we are still sitting there for almost 25 minutes. With a roll of the eyes, a shrug of the shoulders and a “what must I do about it” attitude, she simply pouted her lips at me…
Then she still asked me: “ Do you really what me to go call them?”… Needless to say, with an attitude like that, I declined her offer, feeling that it is not my duty to create any form of work for her…
I simply left, leaving behind my Nightguide calling card that we normally leave behind when reviewing restaurants and clubs, telling her not to bother and that I would rather speak to head-office on Monday.
My companion and I then simply left, and had a great meal at the 24-hour Wimpy on the N2.
SO THE OFFICIAL NIGHTGUIDE VERDICT, AND REVUE ON DROS, Cape Town International Airport…
- Don’t complain about the service, cause it’s simply non-existent anyway, and if you do complain, speak in sign language… English and Afrikaans do not work!!
- Don’t try to speak to a manager, cause they have two there that is too busy to talk to a client.
- Don’t spend money on a hotel, just go to the Dros and sleep on the chairs.
- Do bring your own kitchen-cloth to wipe your own table.
- Do pack your own foldaway Captain’s Chair if you are flying to Cape Town, as the Dros do have a problem keeping 4 chairs at a four-seater table.
How does their add go again??… “COME THIRSTY”…
Now let me finish it… “COME THIRSTY… LEAVE HUNGRY, DIRTY AND THIRSTY…”
Now for all 186 000 monthly visitors to our Website, here is a tip if you fly Domestic Flights to Cape Town…
Get your baggage, and as you walk out of the arrival area and you see the Dros, turn right and LEAVE the “Domestic Arrivals” Building… Turn right again and walk about 40 meters, where you will see the “Domestic Departures” Building. Enter this one, and you will see an awesome place with service, clean tables and competent, non-arrogant staff called the SPUR!!
Well done Dros, and sorry that Nightguide was such a nuisance by trying to make use of your services. We unfortunately cannot rate your services, food etc, cause it is non-existent!! We also cant review your food quality, etc cause it seems you do not serve any..
Regards

GLOBAL WRAPPS...
Today's life is fast paced. Modern technology such as the Internet and cell phones enable us to cram more into our day. But our eating habits suffer at the expense of getting everything else; work, sport and socializing, all wrapped up before we think of our stomachs. The fast food options available today compound the problem. Fried, non-nutritious foods high in fat not only expand the waistline but lower energy levels, preventing you from getting what you want out of life.
But now there is a solution to your nutrition problems. Global Wrapps offers a healthy alternative to modern fast food: the wrapp.
Wrapps originated from the Mexican burrito, a convenient pack lunch for cowboys on the hoof. With fillings like spicy beef, refried beans and salsa, these burritos enclosed the flavours of Mexico. More recently, burritos started to include fillings inspired by cuisines from around the globe and adopted the more universal title of wrapp.
Wrapped foods are not a new concept. Every type of cuisine has some form of wrapped food, from the Greek gyros to the Chinese egg roll. Global Wrapps have chosen the most popular flavours from around the world and combined them with the tastiest combination of local ingredients. What makes our wrapps unique is these fillings are enclosed in our trademark lavish bread. They use lavish breads because they are tastier and lighter than most other wrappers.
GLOBAL WRAPPS can be enjoyed 24/7: morning, noon and night. Boiled egg, bacon, sliced potato, mozzarella and chopped tomato are combined in our Power Breakfast Wrapp, designed to give you a boost to beat anything your day throws at you. Midday wrapps fill you up, not weigh you down, so you don't feel like snoozing your afternoon away. Their evening wrapps invite you to explore taste sensations from around the world…Fresh coriander complementing garlic yoghurt from the Mediterranean, spicy chicken with peanut sauce from Thailand, mozzarella, basil and sun-dried tomatoes from Italy, Cajun chicken spiced with chilli salsa from Mexico. These flavours are all enticingly combined with fresh, natural ingredients to make each bite a fiesta of food in your mouth.

Whether you are a customer, franchisee or landlord, Global Wrapps will be wrapping up the good taste for you soon.

Smoothies are one of the most popular trends in fast food today. Healthy, refreshing and satisfying, they are the perfect accompaniment to a wrapp. Choose from their healthy non-dairy options mixed with real fruit or the sinfully delicious combinations such as creamy peanut butter, fresh bananas and milk blended with vanilla ice cream.
Low Fat
Typically, Global Wrapps wraps have fat content that ranges from 4.5% to 10% by weight. This compares with up to 40% fat content in some other fast food offerings, e.g. burgers, fried chicken and pizzas as well as in similar products offered by some direct competitors.
Nutritional Information
Global Wrapps's food exemplifies the Mediterranean diet that everyone's talking about. But what makes a diet "Mediterranean" from a nutritional perspective? First, a moderate amount of high-quality protein; second, moderate portions of complex carbohydrates (especially from fresh vegetables); and third, an ensurance that their core products have the lowest fat content possible - typically less than 10%.
Global Wrapps uses only A grade beef and chicken breasts which are trimmed of all fat. They then only grill the beef or chicken because of the superior nutritional value as it allows any excess fat to run off, whilst superior taste and succulence is retained by means of spicing.Their Wrapps have extremely favourable protein/carbohydrate/fat ratios - in fact in almost exactly the same proportional macro-nutrient ratio recommended in the New York Times best-seller "Enter the Zone" by Dr Barry Sear.
This favourable ratio helps keep the body's blood sugar levels stable - which is the key to keeping body fat low. In addition, research shows that keeping blood sugar and insulin levels stable aids concentration (avoid the 3:30 p.m. sugar crash) and assists the body in innumerable ways to stay healthy by providing a balanced internal hormone environment. When you add Global Wrapps's authentic sauces and dips it is surprising how healthy great flavours can be: the tahini (sesame seed) based sauces will add some of the best unsaturated oil (linleic acid) to the diet. The garlic yoghurt adds lactobacilus acidophilus to the body, another universally recognised health food. Chick peas, the primary ingredient in hummus, are an excellent vegetarian source of protein and very low in fat, and the fresh garlic used has been shown to be a powerful natural anti-biotic in many recent studies. In addition Global Wrapps offer a huge array of vitamins, phytochemicals and bioflavinoids that are contained in the large variety of fresh vegetables and in the salads in the Wrapps. It is now well accepted that anti-oxidants play a preventative role in cancer, strokes and heart disease. Parsely, for example, contains high concentrations of anti-oxidants (monoterpenes, among others). The tomatoes contain lycopene, another powerful anti-oxidant and an anti-cancer agent and don't forget the essential fibre contained in the salads and vegetables.
Whenever possible they avoid using any products that contain preservatives.
COMPANY BACKGROUND
Global Wrapps was established by Fournews Developments (News Café, Fusion Foods) in 1998. Due to the huge success of the News Café brand, Global Wrapps was not given the management and financial resources to ensure its long-term success and was shelved in 2000 after opening only three stores.
The emergence and development of Global Wrapps was keenly observed by Nick Nicolau, then director and founding member of the Ocean Basket Group. He had witnessed the growth and rapid development of this concept in the USA and believed that the same success could be achieved in SA. However, at the time his obligations to Ocean Basket prevented him from any involvement with Global Wrapps.
In the second half of 2001 Nick sold his interest in the Ocean Basket Group to explore other opportunities in the food sector. He concluded a cooperation agreement with Fournews Developments in January 2002 that saw his company acquiring all the rights including full control over the growth and development of Global Wrapps. The agreement places Global Wrapps in the unique position that it is still able to benefit from all the resources and experience of the hugely successful Fournews Developments Group.
FOURNEWS DEVELOPMENTS - BACKGROUND
Headed by a young, dynamic team the five directors of Fournews Developments (Stavros Florias, Evan Florias, Lambro Argirys, Nick Eleftheriadis and Michael Deftereos) have made a huge impact in the food retail sector through their exciting and innovative News Café concept. Further divisions in the company are Fusion Foods, the manufacturing and distribution arm, and Bar Support Services a Food & Beverage management company with clients in the Hotel and Casino industries.
Fournews Developments have developed a systematic and professional approach to both the franchising and Food and Beverage industry and are leaders in this competitive market.asd

If you know where the Stellenbosch airfield is situated, you would probably have seen the signs directing you to this superb restaurant. Situated on the R44, this venue is situated right at the turn-off to the airfield.
Although you have to park under the old Pine-trees and you get a feeling of being in a forest, you may have piece of mind that your vehicle will be totally safe while you are enjoying yourself inside. Parking attendants double as security, and there are some very powerful security-lights illuminating the parking area as well.
You will most certainly be greeted at the door by the restaurant Mascot, a Jack Russell that knows its place in the restaurant, namely the door and the door alone. Next to him you will find normally find the owner, or his accomplice in this marvelous venture.
Tables are set properly and immediately after being seated you will be introduced to the extensive wine list. They truly have an above average list of some of South Africa’s best wines, making a decision quite difficult to say the least. Prices are also not to bad, but I would suggest that you must insist in an ice bucket should you order white wine on a Sunday evening. The reason for this is that they are so busy on Sunday afternoons that the newly packed wines didn’t have sufficient time to cool yet for the evening seating.
|
Moving on to the menu, you will find that the starters are from the very simple commonly found favorites to some of the most indulgent delicacies available on the South African market.
Meat is also a favorite amongst its visitors, so expect plenty of hearty meat-dishes.
The main menu offers a great selection of Traditional South African dishes, Italian delicacies, salads, and even something for the ocean-lovers. The main menu will gladly satisfy even the pickiest of clients, and is a feast for the eyes even before you see the food being placed in front of you.
Deserts are in the same category, and we would suggest that you try a different one every time you visit this venue.
Also remember that you can retire to their cozy bar-area after your meal, or make use of it while you are waiting for your fellow-diners to arrive.
The coming winter-season also promises great evenings at La Romantica, as this restaurant boast with huge log fires complimenting the country-like atmosphere they so amazingly created. |
